TLC will host the second annual Pedal to the Potholes for Greater Victoria residents to support alternative methods of transportation in the region and highlight cycle camping at the Sooke Potholes via the Galloping Goose Trail. TLC will also be using the event to promote local farmers: A BBQ featuring farm fresh foods will be waiting for participants at the finish line.
Cyclists will enjoy a leisurely ride from Mountain Equipment Co-op along the Galloping Goose to Sooke Potholes. Formerly a railway line, the 55km Galloping Goose Trail stretches from Victoria to Sooke. Participants will travel through urban, rural and wilderness scenery while supporting a greener alternative to visiting or camping at the Potholes. Upon arrival, cyclists will be greeted by a banquet of food from local farms and live music. All ages welcome. As a special bonus participants will be able to hook up their panniers and carts and cycle camp for one night at the Potholes by donation.
The Sooke Potholes are one of the most recognized features of the Southern Vancouver Island landscape. Famous as a spectacular swimming spot, many residents of the Capital Region have fond memories of their visits to the Potholes.
Lying adjacent to the Galloping Goose Regional Trail, the area offers many recreational opportunities. Cyclists, runners, hikers, horseback riders use the area extensively, in addition to those who come to the Potholes to swim, or to just enjoy the scenery.
In 2004, following numerous attempts to develop the area around the Potholes, TLC with help from Victoria-native Nelly Furtado was able to purchase the site and facilitate the creation of a new regional park and campground.
